Green Shoots: Introducing the new wildE webinar series

Green shoots, our new webinar series launching in October 2023, will bring together youth and experience to explore how rewilding can address the climate and biodiversity crises.

Rewilding is an ecosystem restoration approach aiming to provide more room for natural processes. This approach embraces the natural ability of ecosystems to self-regulate and recover. By providing more room for natural processes, natural dynamics in our landscape can return. However, there is still much to learn about the various environmental, economic and societal challenges to further implementation.

As part of the wildE project, we’re uniting stakeholders from countries across Europe and experts from the environmental sciences, social sciences and economics to help identify opportunities for advancing rewilding to the next level.

The experience of rewilding varies significantly across different countries, landscapes and communities. From introducing grazing to manage wildfire risk, providing development opportunities in shrinking rural areas or managing trade-offs when rewilding in human-dominated landscapes, the focus of rewilding is as diverse as the countries are in Europe. Featuring people and perspectives from all over the EU, Green Shoots will showcase rewilding research and actions from throughout the continent.

Finding solutions to complex challenges, such as scaling up rewilding, demands innovation, new ideas, collaboration and openness. We want our Green Shoots webinars to become fertile spaces where new rewilding ideas can take root and bloom. These webinars will be fast-paced, interactive and lively where experts and young researchers will together share fresh perspectives and discuss innovative new ideas. You’ll hear multiple viewpoints and get a raw glimpse into the discussions and debates taking place within the rewilding community.

Our first researcher to present is the post-doctoral researcher Nacho Villar from the NIOO-KNAW Netherlands Institute for Ecology. Having gained new insights from studying wildlife and ecosystem interactions in the tropical forests of Brazil, he is now back in Europe producing new, cutting-edge research on rewilding. Nacho will present alongside professor in Rewilding Ecology Liesbeth Bakker. Liesbeth studies rewilding as a novel ecosystem restoration technique at the NIOO-KNAW Netherlands Institute for Ecology.

Join us on October 3rd to hear Nacho and Liesbeth present the latest insights on how large wildlife can contribute to climate change mitigation and adaptation. Drawing from their own research and research in the field, they will discuss the vital role of wildlife in ecosystems and their ability to adapt or mitigate climate change.
